Dianna: I read that you signed with Photo Finish Records earlier this year, what made you choose to sign with them?
Nathaniel:
After having met with a lot of labels, both major and indie, it became
clear to us that we wanted the attention of a smaller, more focused
label, at least in the initial, growing phase of our band. Photo Finish
provided just the right fit for that, and when we met with everyone at
the label, it was amazing to see how genuinely excited and motivated
everyone was. They have been nothing but perfect for our band and our
careers. Plus they have super hot, half-naked interns who's only job is
to serve you sugar-coated prunes.
Dianna: What do you say are some of your biggest influences in the music industry?
Nathaniel:
I think that in terms of people, we been fortunate to surround
ourselves with really smart, dynamic and passionate people. Our
manager, Mike Kaminsky is, from what we can tell, one of the brightest
young minds and most forward thinking people in the business. Plus he
wears a sweater everywhere he goes... Our agent Gabriel Apodaca at The
Agency Group is one of the most kind and caring people we've ever met,
in addition to being hard-working, progressive and a terror in the
sack. Matt Galle, our label owner, is one of the young tycoons of the
music business. He has a finger everywhere, and his motivation and work
ethic and genuine zeal for what he does and the bands he works with are
incredible. We've managed to be working with not only the BEST people
around in terms of how good they are at their jobs, but also the best
of friends and truly wonderful homies.... we couldn't be more excited
about it!
Dianna: Is being in a two person band difficult?
Nathaniel:
No way! All we have to blame for mistakes is the other person! If the
mascara is gone... you know who took it. If the board shorts aren't by
the surfboard, it's pretty obvious who's messing around. And then
there's the whole logistics part of it. Only two dudes instead of a
bunch of dudes or chicks. Flights are cheaper. Food is cheaper.
Dianna: You released Want earlier this year, what made you choose that as the album title?
Nathaniel:
We were recording outside of Washington D.C. and I kept hyping my
brother about how cool I thought the record was sounding. He kept
texting me back with various messages saying that we needed or wanted
or had to hear it. Eventually after the 10,000,000th exchange he texted
"WANT".
Dianna: Were there any special guest vocals on want?
Nathaniel:
No mam. Just a couple rude dudes on ludes. Actually I think Benny
Blanco might have slipped in a couple yells in the chorus of Don't
Trust Me after the session. So make that three dudes on that song maybe!
Dianna: What has to be the funniest thing you have seen on Warped Tour this year?
Nathaniel:
The Shwayze dudes try to challenge us in basketball! I love those dudes
to DEATH, but they really need to learn that we take absolutely no
prisoners in b-ball.
Dianna: Do you have any pre-show rituals you do before each show?
Nathaniel:
Not really. We stretch. A lot. We may or may not do a couple sun
salutations before the show backstage. I usually try to tie my shoes up
nice and tight. If it's hot i'll wet myself down a little bit. I check
the mics beforehand. I'm pretty obsessive about that I guess. And
water... oh yeah water. I have to make sure there is a bunch of water
on stage. We sweat. A lot.
Dianna: You had Matt Squire produce Want, what was it like working with him?
Nathaniel:
It was great! Matt has an awesome sense for a hook and what sounds good
and a great pop sensibility. We would write a lot of different vocal
stuff the the beats I had already made a bounce it back and forth and
see what he thought. He has a great sense for the melodies of lyrics
and it was dope to have that third pair of ears to listen and critique
what we were coming up with.
Dianna: Do you have any set plans for after Warped Tour?
Nathaniel:
Oh yeah!! We're doing a bunch of shows in our home state of Colorado!!
We never really got to do a CD release because we were on Warped when WANT
came out so this is kind of a party in that honor I guess. I'm really
excited about it! We are also going to film a music video for "DON’T
TRUST ME" that will be on MTV!!! After all that Sean is going to bike
from NYC to Boulder, Colorado in September, and meanwhile I'm going to
be getting back to doing what I love best and making beats, hopefully
collaborating with some awesome people. Then in October we are starting
our national, headlining tour! We couldn't be more stoked about it,
tickets will be dirt cheap and it will be awesome to hit up all the
places we have been again!
Dianna: You have released both your releases a year apart from each other, so should we be expecting a new release in 2009?
Nathaniel:
I'm not sure about anything concrete. I do know that we will be
continuously recording and creating during the next year. We love being
in the studio and making beats and having fun with our music!
Dianna: Thank you for talking to us! do you have anything else to say to your fans?
Nathaniel:
Just a big THANK YOU. You and Audio Addiction! And a huge smooch to
everyone who has listened, come to a show, partied, and generally had
fun with out music you have made this past year absolutely INCREDIBLE
for us!!!!
